I have been a sleep-deprived parent pacing up and down the landing during the night willing my baby to go back to sleep. Hours of rocking and feeding my baby to try and encourage a few more hours of sleep for us all.
I used to dread bedtime and go to bed at 7pm myself because I was never sure how much sleep I was going to get during the night. I hated the uncertainty of the nights and how lonely and isolated I felt. I knew I wasn’t the only person awake with their baby but I felt very alone standing in the dark, desperate to get my baby back to sleep. I would get so frustrated when it didn’t happen.
So how did I turn this situation around? I had tried so many things on my own. Every friend I talked to about my baby’s sleep had different advice or a different approach. Well-meaning family members would offer their words of wisdom but ultimately nothing helped.
What made the difference was working 1:1 with a sleep consultant. It was life-changing. She took the time to understand my family and put together a plan that was both gentle and effective. It really was a game-changer.
I wanted to share with you five ways in which sleep training my child has changed my life:
- My whole family get a solid sleep EVERY night (unless my children are unwell and this is rare).
- When my children still napped they were long and I had a solid routine I could follow. I used to use that time to work, clean or take some time for myself.
- Bedtimes are ALWAYS stress-free. We have a consistent bedtime routine and the children accept that when I ask them to go to bed it is time to go to bed.
- My mornings don’t start until 7am sometimes later. This is because my children are well-rested.
- My husband and I get an evening together every night. I cannot tell you what that time does for our relationship. We can also go out for date nights without worrying.
This is all possible for you and your family! I don’t use Cry It Out, either. This is all thanks to my Unique Layered Response Technique.
Don’t just take my word for it! Below is a video from a mum who I worked with over a year ago. She explains what it is like to work with me and how things have changed for her family since she sleep-trained her little boy.
I’m on a mission to educate young families about infant and child sleep because every family deserves to get a good night’s sleep. After all, sleep is not a luxury it is a biological necessity!
